Preventative Measures and Control Strategies
Preventative Measures and Control Strategies
Preventative measures focus on eliminating hazards or reducing the risk of accidents. Housekeeping is fundamental: keeping floors clean, dry, and free of clutter, securing cables, removing obstacles, and ensuring storage areas are organised all contribute to safety.
Environmental controls include non-slip flooring, anti-slip mats, adequate lighting, handrails, and clearly marked changes in floor level. Signage warning of temporary hazards, such as wet floors, helps raise awareness and reduce risk. Seasonal measures, like clearing snow and ice, are also important.
Work practices should encourage safe behaviour. Employees should be trained to walk, not run, maintain focus when moving around, use handrails, and avoid carrying objects that obstruct vision. Suitable footwear with appropriate grip is a simple but effective measure to reduce slips.
For workplaces involving work at height, ladders, scaffolds, or platforms must be secure and used correctly. Safety harnesses, guardrails, and fall protection equipment reduce the risk of serious injury. Staff must receive training on safe access and equipment use.
