Journey Planning, Distraction Management, and Fatigue Prevention
Journey Planning, Distraction Management, and Fatigue Prevention
Effective journey planning, awareness of distractions, and fatigue management are essential for safe driving. Proper preparation minimises risks and ensures timely, safe arrivals at destinations.
Journey Planning
- Plan routes in advance, considering traffic, weather, and roadworks.
- Allow sufficient time for rest breaks on long journeys to avoid fatigue.
- Identify safe parking locations, refuelling points, and emergency contacts.
Distraction Management
- Avoid using mobile phones while driving, including hands-free devices unless absolutely necessary.
- Minimise in-vehicle distractions such as loud music, eating, or adjusting navigation systems while moving.
- Focus on the road and maintain full attention on driving tasks.
Fatigue Prevention
- Take regular breaks during long journeys, ideally every two hours or 100 miles.
- Ensure adequate sleep before driving, especially for long-distance or night travel.
- Recognise early signs of fatigue, such as yawning, reduced concentration, or drifting lanes, and stop to rest immediately.
By planning journeys, reducing distractions, and managing fatigue, drivers maintain optimal performance and reduce the likelihood of accidents. Organisations should provide guidance on journey planning, safe work hours, and driver wellbeing to support safe practices.
