Rising Mains – Dry Risers and Wet Risers
Rising mains are critical infrastructure installations in multi-storey buildings that provide firefighting water supplies at elevated levels. Dry risers consist of vertical pipework with inlet points at ground level and outlets on each floor, but contain no water until connected by the fire service.
They are commonly used in buildings up to around 18 metres where internal fire service water supplies are impractical. Wet risers, by contrast, are permanently charged with water and equipped with pumps, enabling immediate water flow to outlet points throughout the building. These systems allow firefighters to connect hoses at convenient points without running long lengths of hose from ground level. Installation must comply with standards to ensure adequate pressure and flow rates, with outlet locations clearly marked and accessible.
Maintenance includes regular pressure testing, flushing, and inspection of valves and pipework to prevent corrosion or blockages. The effectiveness of rising mains depends on proper design, installation, and regular testing to ensure they can deliver sufficient water volume and pressure during firefighting operations.
