Control Measures and Safe Entry
Control Measures and Safe Entry
Some key strategies include:
Isolation: Ensure machinery, valves, or other energy sources are locked out before entry. Confined spaces often contain hazardous machinery that must be isolated.
Ventilation: Provide natural or mechanical ventilation to remove toxic gases, maintain oxygen levels, and prevent accumulation of flammable vapours.
Gas Testing: Use calibrated gas detectors to test oxygen, flammable gases, and toxic gases before and during entry. Testing ensures the atmosphere remains safe throughout the task.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Depending on hazards, this may include respirators, gloves, protective clothing, safety harnesses, or lifelines.
Lighting: Adequate lighting ensures workers can see clearly, reducing slips, trips, and other hazards. Explosion-proof lights may be needed in flammable atmospheres.
Communication: Maintain continuous communication between workers inside and supervisors or attendants outside the confined space. Radios or hand signals are commonly used.
Emergency Preparedness: Have rescue equipment, trained personnel, and emergency procedures ready. Confined space rescues are highly specialised and require pre-planning.
