A fundamental responsibility of Fire Wardens is assisting with fire risk assessments and identifying potential hazards. Fire hazards are conditions or materials that increase the likelihood of a fire or exacerbate its impact. By identifying and addressing hazards, Fire Wardens help prevent fires before they occur.
Common Fire Hazards
Faulty wiring, overloaded sockets, and malfunctioning appliances can ignite fires. Fire Wardens monitor and report electrical hazards to management.
Improper storage of fuels, chemicals, paper, and textiles increases fire risk. Wardens ensure that flammable substances are stored safely and handled according to guidelines.
Blocked corridors, locked doors, or poorly marked exits can hinder evacuation. Fire Wardens regularly inspect and ensure that all escape routes remain accessible.
Smoking, misuse of heating equipment, or failure to follow fire safety procedures can trigger incidents. Fire Wardens raise awareness and monitor compliance.
Fire Risk Assessment Process:
- Identify potential fire hazards in the workplace.
- Determine who may be harmed and the level of risk.
- Evaluate existing controls and their effectiveness.
- Recommend improvements or additional measures.
- Record findings and ensure they are communicated to relevant personnel.
- Review and update the assessment regularly or when significant changes occur.
Fire Wardens support management by conducting regular inspections, reporting hazards, and ensuring that recommendations from fire risk assessments are implemented. They act as advocates for proactive fire prevention within the organisation.
