Implementing Control Measures
Implementing Control Measures
Supervisors are responsible for implementing control measures that reduce or eliminate risks.
The hierarchy of controls provides guidance for prioritising safety measures:
Remove the hazard entirely if possible, such as replacing dangerous machinery or eliminating unnecessary work at height.
Replace hazardous substances or processes with safer alternatives. For example, using water-based paints instead of solvent-based paints.
Install guards, barriers, ventilation systems, or automated equipment to reduce exposure to hazards.
Implement safe systems of work, policies, procedures, training, supervision, and signage to guide safe behaviour.
Provide gloves, helmets, respirators, safety glasses, or hearing protection as a last line of defence.
Supervisors must ensure that control measures are applied consistently, maintained, and monitored for effectiveness. They should conduct regular inspections and involve employees in identifying improvements. Leadership in enforcing safety procedures is critical, as employees often mirror supervisory behaviour.
Additionally, supervisors must ensure that emergency procedures are understood and followed. This includes fire evacuation, first aid provision, chemical spills, machinery failure, and confined space rescue. Regular drills and training reinforce safe practices and ensure that employees can respond effectively in emergencies.
