Module 4: How to Conduct a DSEAR Assessment
How to Conduct a DSEAR Assessment
Welcome to Module 4 of the DSEAR Risk Assessor E-Learning Course.
In this module, we’ll walk through the step-by-step process for completing a DSEAR risk assessment — from identifying hazards to defining control measures and hazardous zones.
By the end of this module, you will:
- Understand each stage of the DSEAR assessment process.
- Be able to identify and assess risks from dangerous substances.
- Recognise how to classify hazardous zones.
- Know how to select appropriate control measures and document your findings.
Understanding the Purpose of a DSEAR Assessment
The purpose of a DSEAR assessment is to ensure that risks from dangerous substances — those capable of causing fire, explosion or similar events — are identified, evaluated, and controlled.
The assessment should:
- Identify all potential sources of ignition and release.
- Evaluate the likelihood and consequences of those releases igniting.
- Determine whether an explosive atmosphere could form.
- Recommend suitable measures to prevent or mitigate harm.
A DSEAR assessment must be proportionate — detailed enough to cover all significant hazards, but not unnecessarily complex. The depth of the assessment should reflect the level of risk.
Step-by-Step DSEAR Assessment Process
A good DSEAR assessment typically follows seven structured steps.
Practical Tips for Assessors
- Always walk the site — don’t rely solely on paperwork.
- Engage with operators and maintenance staff; they often know where risks occur.
- Ensure drawings and zone maps are up to date.
- Take photographs (where allowed) to support your documentation.
- Verify that all electrical and mechanical equipment in zones is ATEX certified where required.
